The concept of sustainability is more than 300 years old and was originally defined in forestry: when managing forests, no more may be harvested than can naturally regrow.

The House of Salm-Salm has faced the challenges of sustainable management for 32 generations. Against the historical background of viticulture, forestry, and agriculture within the family’s own operations, the guiding principle for generations has been to pass something on in better condition than it was received. The sustainable management of forests and agricultural land is therefore at the core of our corporate philosophy. Salm Global Land combines economic benefit with ecological responsibility.
In view of today’s climatic challenges, it has never been more important to integrate land and forestry investments into a diversified investment portfolio. Global urbanization and ambitious climate targets, above all the reduction of carbon emissions by 2050, require new, responsible strategies in dealing with natural resources. Forests and agricultural land play a key role in this context.
We plant fast-growing, site-appropriate tree species that absorb particularly large amounts of CO₂. A large portion of the harvested wood is used as construction timber, ensuring that the bound carbon remains stored over the long term. After every logging operation, we ensure reforestation of the areas so that carbon storage is sustainably maintained.
Of particular ecological value are the streams running through the property and the adjacent “buffer zones,” which are mostly stocked with near-natural deciduous forests. The streams and riparian zones are important habitats for numerous species of fish, mollusks, insects, mammals, and birds. As part of “stream zone management,” we protect these areas to allow space for natural development and to promote biodiversity.
Before acquiring any land, we assess ecological risks through environmental impact studies. Our forests are regularly inspected by independent auditors and certified according to international standards such as FSC, PEFC, or American Tree Farm.
We manage our land in a way that preserves soil fertility, water resources, and biodiversity over the long term. We rely on modern crop rotations, soil-conserving cultivation, and the preservation of humus to sustainably secure productivity.
We work closely with regional businesses to reduce dependence on global supply chains and to ensure a stable supply in times of crisis. By selectively expanding organic cultivation areas, we support the growing demand for regional organic food and promote local value creation.
Investments in agriculture always strengthen rural regions. Economic stability and long-term commitment create and preserve jobs as well as solid infrastructure. This keeps rural areas vibrant and attractive for future generations.
Salm Global Land is committed to the highest environmental standards and consistently aligns its actions with the ecological objectives of the ESG criteria. Our overarching goal is to preserve and promote ecological stability. This includes the responsible use of natural resources as well as an active contribution to climate protection. As part of our sustainable management of forest and agricultural land, we work purposefully to strengthen natural ecosystems, preserve biodiversity, and reduce CO₂ emissions over the long term. Our forestry activities are carried out exclusively in accordance with recognized, independent certification systems that guarantee the highest ecological standards. In this way, we ensure that our management creates not only economic but also ecological value-for the environment, the climate, and future generations.
We are committed to upholding the highest labor and social standards for our employees, partners and service providers. We strictly reject child and forced labor. Fair wages, occupational safety and the protection of human rights are binding.
Salm Global Land is committed to the principles of the ILO, the UN Global Compact, and the OECD Guidelines. Processes to monitor compliance with these standards are firmly integrated into our company.
We ensure correct ownership structures and always act in accordance with local and international laws. Our cooperation with communities, service providers, and partners is characterized by respect and transparency.
Ethical corporate governance, the promotion of our employees, and the consistent implementation of compliance are integral parts of our corporate culture. Risks are assessed proactively and actively managed.
From the perspective of sustainable development, forestry is of particular interest. The concept of sustainability first emerged in the 18th century in connection with forestry. It was also the forestry sector that first put sustainable development into practice by harvesting only as many trees as could naturally regrow.
Today, forestry plays an important role in the transition to a sustainable society.
Salm Global Land’s standards are of the highest level and therefore comply with the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (UN PRI), which are specifically tailored to investments in timber and farmland.
