The concept of sustainability is over 300 years old and was originally defined in forestry: When managing forests, more must never be used than grows back naturally.

Haus Salm-Salm has been facing up to the challenges of sustainable management for 32 generations. Against the historical background of wine, forestry and agriculture in our own family business, it has been a matter of being able to pass on something better for generations. The sustainable management of forests and agricultural land is therefore at the heart of our corporate philosophy. Salm Global Land combines economic benefit with ecological responsibility.
In view of the current climate challenges, it has never been more important to include land and forest investments in a diversified investment portfolio. Global urbanization and ambitious climate targets - above all the reduction of carbon emissions by 2050 - require new, responsible strategies in the use of natural resources. Forests and agricultural land play a key role in this.
We plant fast-growing, site-appropriate tree species that absorb a particularly large amount of CO₂. A large proportion of the harvested wood is used as construction timber, which means that the sequestered carbon is stored for the long term. After each felling, we ensure that the areas are reforested so that the carbon storage remains sustainable.
Of particular ecological value are the watercourses running through the property and the adjacent „buffer zones“, which are mostly covered with semi-natural deciduous forest. The watercourses and riparian zones are important habitats for numerous fish, molluscs, insects, mammals and birds. As part of „Streamzone Management“, we protect these areas in order to provide space for natural development and promote biodiversity.
Before purchasing any land, we check the ecological risks by means of environmental assessments. We have our forests regularly inspected by independent auditors and certify them according to international standards such as FSC, PEFC or American Tree Farm.
We cultivate our land in such a way that soil fertility, water resources and biodiversity are preserved in the long term. Some of the cultivated areas are farmed organically - without chemical treatment, using only mechanical care. We rely on modern crop rotations, soil-conserving cultivation and the preservation of humus to ensure sustainable productivity.
We work closely with regional businesses to reduce our dependence on global supply chains and ensure a stable supply in times of crisis. Through the targeted expansion of organic farmland, we support the growing demand for regional organic food and promote local value creation.
Investments in agriculture always strengthen rural areas. Economic stability and long-term commitment create and maintain jobs and a good infrastructure. This keeps rural regions vibrant and attractive for future generations.
Salm Global Land is committed to the highest environmental standards and consistently aligns its actions with the ecological goals of the ESG criteria. Our overriding goal is to maintain and promote ecological stability. This includes the responsible use of natural resources as well as an active contribution to climate protection. As part of our sustainable management of forest and agricultural land, we work specifically to strengthen natural ecosystems, preserve biodiversity and reduce CO₂ emissions in the long term. Our forestry activities are carried out exclusively in accordance with recognized, independent certification systems that guarantee the highest ecological standards. In this way, we ensure that our management creates not only economic but also ecological added value - for the environment, climate and future generations.
We are committed to upholding the highest labor and social standards for our employees, partners and service providers. We strictly reject child and forced labor. Fair wages, occupational safety and the protection of human rights are binding.
Salm Global Land is committed to the principles of the ILO, the UN Global Compact and the OECD Guidelines. Processes for monitoring compliance with these standards are firmly integrated into our company.
We pay attention to correct ownership structures and always act in accordance with local and international laws. Our cooperation with communities, service providers and partners is characterized by respect and transparency.
Ethical corporate governance, employee development and the consistent implementation of compliance are an integral part of our corporate culture. Risks are assessed with foresight and actively managed.
Forestry is of particular interest from the point of view of sustainable development. The concept of sustainability first appeared in the 18th century in connection with forestry. It was also the forestry sector that was the first to implement sustainable development by harvesting only as many trees as could grow back naturally.
Today, forestry plays an important role in the transition to a sustainable society.
Salm Global Land's standards are of the highest level. They therefore also comply with the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (UN PRI), which are tailored to investments in timber and farmland.
